What the option chain shows

Thursday's session unfolded as a study in diverging closes beneath a shared midday inflection. Both indices opened on steadier footing—Nifty with a modest 0.064% gap up, Sensex a fraction lower at -0.068%—and held neutral ground through the morning hours. The first real shift came at the 12:30 checkpoint, where sentiment cracked decisively lower across the board.

Nifty's move was the more committed of the two. After holding its opening gains through mid-morning, the index turned decisively bearish at 12:30 and remained anchored to that bias into the close. It finished at 23,873.45, down 0.172% on the day, having spent the entire second half grinding toward session lows. The day's range of 152 points—from a high of 24,025.4 down to the close—placed the index at the absolute floor of its daily envelope, a posture that reflects the sustained selling pressure that set in after lunch.

Bias and readiness

Sensex told a messier story. It too swung bearish at 12:30, prompting a tactical shift in positioning, but then reversed back to neutral territory by 1:30 as volatility and two-way flow reasserted themselves. The benchmark closed at 76,152.86, a steeper percentage decline of -0.548%, yet that sharper loss coincided with a neutral bias rather than a bearish close—a signal mismatch worth noting. Sensex's range was considerably wider, spanning 772 points from 76,924.48 at the high, leaving ample intraday opportunity that the close did not fully capture.

The divergence between the two is notable. Nifty's commitment to session lows and sustained bearish bias suggests conviction on the downside in large-cap names, while Sensex's larger percentage loss paired with a return to neutral suggests heaviness elsewhere in the 50-stock basket, possibly in mid or smallcap representatives within the index, without the same directional conviction. Nifty's close at the lows also signals that sellers remained in control through the final hour, whereas Sensex's recovery to neutral hints at some stabilization attempts in the latter stages.

Levels to watch

From a continuity standpoint, Thursday reversed the prior session's steadiness. The midday pivot into bearishness marks a clear shift in market temper, with the morning's equilibrium giving way to afternoon pressure. For Nifty, that pressure held through the close; for Sensex, it eased into the final prints. Both indices ended in negative territory, but the texture of their declines—and their closing bias signals—differed enough to suggest sector-level splits worth monitoring in the next session.
