What the option chain shows
Monday's session proved to be a study in momentum shifts that ultimately favored the bears. Both indices opened with weakness—Nifty gapping down 0.685% and Sensex down 0.774%—and while neither managed to shake the early bearish tilt, the intraday path showed distinct turns before sellers reasserted control into the close.
Nifty held its opening bias firmly through the morning, trading with a bearish lean that kept sellers engaged. The index carved out a day high of 23,080.25 in early moves but never found sustained buying to extend higher. A brief neutral window at the 12:30 checkpoint offered a momentary reprieve, but the reprieve was shallow. By 1:30 PM, bearish pressure rolled back in, and the index spent its final hours grinding toward the session low, ultimately closing at 22,780.25—down 1.581% on the day and settling at the lower end of its 318-point range. The close left little room for interpretation: sellers had the final say.
Bias and readiness
Sensex's path showed a similar but subtly different arc. Unlike Nifty, which opened bearish and stayed there, Sensex opened with a bullish gap—the only real bright spot of the morning—before reversing course by 10:30 AM. That flip to bearish prompted a shift in positioning, yet the index managed to hold higher ground through late morning. The 12:30 neutral checkpoint again offered a tactical pause, but by 1:30 PM the same bearish pressure that gripped Nifty reasserted itself. Sensex closed at 72,771.72, down 1.545%, having surrendered its entire opening advantage and then some. With a day range of 1,024.62 points, the index finished at its low point—72,716.23—and the close left it vulnerable to further selling if Monday's momentum carries forward.
What unites the two indices is the character of Monday's finish: neither recovered from the afternoon's bearish wave, and both printed their session lows in the final stretch. The closing positions—at the very bottom of their respective day ranges—signal that supply overwhelmed demand as the session wound down. Nifty's slightly larger percentage decline reflects sharper weakness in its heavyweight components, while Sensex's -1.545% move shows comparable but marginally lighter selling pressure on the broader index.
Levels to watch
The prior session's close sets the context: Monday's gap-down openings confirmed that weakness was flowing in, and the day's inability to stage a meaningful recovery—despite the midday neutral snapshots—underscores that the bearish bias held structural weight throughout.
