What the option chain shows

Friday's session brought modest gains to both headline indices, though they took distinctly different paths to the close. Nifty50 finished at 23140.5, up 77.25 points or 0.334%, while Sensex climbed 315.96 points to 73895.74—a 0.427% advance. The outperformance from the broader Sensex suggests strength in the larger-cap names, even as both indices remained well within single-digit fractional territory.

Both indices opened with a slight gap down, Nifty starting 0.351% lower and Sensex mirroring that pessimism with a -0.348% dip. The early tone hinted at potential weakness carryover, yet neither index capitalized on its downside. Nifty's intraday range stretched from a low of 23020.95 to a high of 23162.7—a roughly 142-point swing—while Sensex traced a broader 490-point band between 73477.77 and 73968.05. Both closed well into the upper half of their daily ranges, suggesting accumulation toward the final bell.

Bias and readiness

The Nifty story unfolded in discrete shifts. A bullish impulse arrived around 10:30 with call debit spreads drawing interest, marking the first meaningful bid into the session. That momentum stalled by 11:30, retreating back to neutral where the index held its ground through the early afternoon lull. The real turning point came at 2:30, when fresh buying emerged to propel the index higher into the close. Sensex, by contrast, showed no such dramatic reversals. It held a neutral bias throughout all five checkpoint intervals, accumulating gains in a more muted, grinding fashion without ever tilting decisively bullish during the session proper—yet still managed to outpace Nifty on a percentage basis by the close.

The discrepancy is worth noting. While Nifty displayed more pronounced directional swings intraday, Sensex's steadier, less volatile path to a larger percentage gain suggests that heavyweights in the index were doing the lifting. The lack of any mid-day bias flip in Sensex even as Nifty flirted with bullish setups implies that strength was concentrated rather than broad-based—a narrower group of stocks pulling the index higher.

Levels to watch

Friday's close with both indices in the green, sitting in the upper portions of their daily ranges, and extending the prior session's recovery bid marks a modest stabilization after the earlier gap-down opens. The pattern shows neither panic nor conviction, but rather a pragmatic climb toward session close that rewarded patience over the session's final hour.
