What the option chain shows

Tuesday's session unfolded as a study in conflicting closes despite a shared mid-day stumble. Both indices opened near flat and drifted through the morning and early afternoon in neutral territory, but diverged in how they digested a sharp bearish thrust that arrived around 1:30 pm.

Nifty opened with a negligible 0.029% gap and held that equilibrium through mid-day checkpoints. The index traded a 204.25-point range between its 23489 high and 23285.75 low, with most of the session's friction confined to that band. When sentiment lurched bearish at 1:30—sharp enough to shift the tape's preferred strategy from Iron Condor setups to Call Credit Spreads—Nifty felt the pressure. But the index proved resilient; the bearish bias reversed by 2:30 and the remainder of the session ticked back to neutral footing. The close at 23329 fell 85.25 points (–0.366%) from Monday's finish, leaving Nifty near the middle of its intraday range despite the day's volatility arc.

Bias and readiness

Sensex told a similar but distinct story. It opened with a fractionally larger gap down of 0.034% and maintained its neutral stance through 1:30 pm, tracking Nifty's rhythm through the morning. The index's range—75038.93 to 74423.71—was proportionally wider than Nifty's, reflecting the Sensex's traditional amplification of market moves. At 2:30 pm, however, Sensex diverged from Nifty's recovery. While Nifty returned to neutral, Sensex held its bearish tilt through the close. The Sensex shut at 74529.08, a decline of 330.85 points (–0.443%), and crucially, it ended with a bearish bias stamped into the tape rather than a neutral one.

The split between the two indices—Nifty neutral, Sensex bearish—suggests that large-cap heavyweights in the Sensex weighted down the index more persistently than the broader Nifty 50 composition felt pressure. Nifty's resilience into the close hints at mid-caps or defensive names holding their ground after the 1:30 hit, while the Sensex's sticky bearish finish points to its larger constituents failing to recover the same ground.

Levels to watch

Both indices closed well above their session lows, indicating that the mid-day selling lacked follow-through conviction. Still, the fact that neither index managed to claw back to unchanged territory underscores that Tuesday's neutral-to-bearish flip, even if brief, left marks on the tape.
