What the option chain shows

Tuesday's session opened on a near-flat footing for both indices, but the two took markedly different paths through the morning before converging on weakness into the final hour. Nifty opened with a marginal 0.056% gap and settled into a narrow trading band, holding that equilibrium through most of the morning and early afternoon. Sensex began similarly neutral at a 0.072% gap but showed more oscillation—a brief bullish tilt emerged around 11:30 a.m., only to fade back to neutral by mid-afternoon.

The turning point arrived at 2:30 p.m. when sentiment shifted decisively bearish across both indices. Nifty, which had clung to a range-bound character suitable for iron condor positioning through the first four hours, reversed into call credit spread territory as sellers took over. That bearish momentum persisted through the close. Sensex, which had been rotating through neutral, joined the move lower as the session wound down. The final half-hour left no room for recovery.

Bias and readiness

Nifty closed at 24,055.8, marking a decline of 24.45 points or 0.102%. The index traded a 190.6-point range on the day, from a high of 24,143.15 down to a low of 23,952.55—and the close landed near the session low, underscoring the strength of the late afternoon reversal. Sensex fared marginally better in percentage terms, closing at 76,944.28 with a loss of just 13.15 points or 0.017%, though the index too was pressed into negative territory. Its intraday range spanned 575.75 points (77,231.87 to 76,656.12), and like Nifty, it finished in the lower half of that band.

The divergence in point losses—Nifty down roughly twice as much in absolute terms—reflects the broader character of Tuesday's selloff: weakness was concentrated enough to sting the Nifty-weighted portfolio but diffused enough across Sensex constituents to limit aggregate damage. Neither index found support in the final minutes; both closed with the bearish bias intact. Coming off the prior session's close, this represents a shift away from any holding pattern and into a confirmed downturn, albeit modest in scale. The afternoon's transition from morning complacency to late-session pressure suggests a change in participant conviction rather than a capitulation move—a grinding lower rather than a panic.
