What the option chain shows

Wednesday's session opened on a modest positive footing across both indices, with Nifty gapping 0.567% higher and Sensex 0.618% above the prior close. The opening strength, however, proved short-lived and largely hollow. Neither index built on those gains through the morning hours—checkpoints at 10:30, 11:30, and noon all confirmed a neutral bias, suggesting early buyers had little conviction and sideways consolidation held sway.

The character shifted noticeably at 1:30 p.m., when both indices turned decisively bullish. Nifty's move was sharp enough to trigger a call debit spread setup, signaling renewed upside momentum and drawing fresh buying interest into the session's final hour. For a moment, a recovery from the morning flatness looked credible. Sensex maintained that bullish lean through the close, underpinning a steadier finish on the larger index.

Bias and readiness

Nifty, however, surrendered the afternoon gains before the final bell. By 2:30 p.m., the bullish bias evaporated and the index slipped back to neutral, ending the day down 0.224% at 22,698.85. The move placed the close well within the day's range—the index printed a high of 22,778.05 and a low of 22,497.70, leaving the final price closer to the middle of that 280-point span. The fade erased all of the intraday recovery and then some.

Sensex's story tilted differently. Despite a similar morning drift and the same 1:30 p.m. inflection into bullish territory, the larger index held its footing better as the session wound down. The Sensex closed down 0.481%—nearly double Nifty's percentage loss—at 73,246.03. Yet that steeper loss masked a different intraday trajectory: having swung bullish at 1:30, Sensex maintained that bias through the close, suggesting underlying support held firm even as the index gave back more absolute points. The day's range of 922 points (73,525.44 high to 72,603.57 low) positioned the close in the upper half of the day's trading band.

Levels to watch

The divergence between the two indices—Nifty's afternoon reversal versus Sensex's resilience—hints at mixed conviction on Wednesday. Both started flat, both found late-session strength, but only Sensex converted that into a close with retained bullish undertone. Nifty's abandonment of gains suggests selling pressure or profit-taking in the final stretch, a small but notable crack in the day's attempted recovery. Neither index departed dramatically from the prior close, keeping both consolidative and neither showing decisive directional resolve heading into Thursday's session.
