What the option chain shows
Monday's session saw both headline indices surrender ground, though the timing and severity of their declines diverged meaningfully over the course of the day.
Nifty began the day on neutral footing, opening with a marginal 0.046% gap and maintaining that equilibrium through mid-morning. The shift came at 11:30, when selling pressure intensified and pushed the index into a bearish lean that persisted through the final bell. The index closed at 22,363.35, down 156.95 points or 0.702%, having retreated from its intraday high of 22,651.1 to settle near the lower end of the day's 347-point range.
Bias and readiness
Sensex told a more restless story. It opened already on the back foot with a 0.244% gap down, then recovered ground to neutral status by 10:30, suggesting early-session stabilization. That balance held through 11:30, but the 12:30 checkpoint marked a sharp deterioration—a strong bearish bias took hold. Unlike Nifty's consistent downtrend from mid-morning onward, Sensex staged a brief recovery at 1:30 that briefly lifted sentiment back to neutral. That reprieve was short-lived; the index rolled back into bearish territory by the 2:30 close. Sensex ended at 71,924.68, off 548.57 points or 0.761%, closing in the lower half of its 1,208-point intraday span.
The divergence in intraday trajectory is notable: Nifty's decline was more linear and sustained once it began, whereas Sensex oscillated between neutral and bearish states before settling into red. Both indices, however, ended the session decisively lower and positioned in the bottom half of their daily ranges—a character consistent with genuine selling rather than mere pullback noise.
Levels to watch
The 0.702% loss on Nifty against 0.761% on Sensex reflects the latter's slightly sharper pain, though both moves remain measured in absolute terms. Neither index breached structural support decisively, but the mid-session pivot away from neutral territory, particularly Sensex's lurch into strong bearish at 12:30, suggests momentum shifted lower as the week opened. Relative to the prior session's close, both indices carry the weight of this Monday weakness into the rest of the trading week.
