Physical settlement in stock F&O

Index options in India are cash-settled, but stock options settle by delivery. An in-the-money stock option held to expiry becomes an actual purchase or sale of the shares, with the full contract value due rather than the settlement difference — an obligation many multiples of the premium paid.

Two settlement regimes, one market

NIFTY and SENSEX options settle in cash: at expiry the difference between the strike and the closing level is paid, and no security changes hands. Every other lesson in this module uses index options, so every figure in them is a cash difference.

Stock options do not work that way. An option on a single stock that finishes in the money is exercised into the shares themselves — a long call becomes a purchase at the strike, a short call becomes an obligation to deliver.

The consequence is a change in the size of the commitment rather than in its direction. A contract bought for a few thousand rupees in premium can settle into a delivery obligation worth several lakh, because the obligation is sized by the contract value and the premium never was.

What decides it, and when

Moneyness at the expiry close decides it, and nothing before that does. A position closed before expiry never reaches settlement at all, which is why the practical guidance from every broker is about the final session rather than about the days before it.

Brokers apply their own margin escalations through expiry week on positions that could go to delivery, and they will square off positions where the delivery obligation cannot be met. Those policies differ between brokers and are not exchange rules.

MarketCue captures the daily closing chain for 209 F&O stock symbols, so which contracts finished in the money on a given expiry is a matter of record rather than of recollection.

Where this bites hardest

A barely in-the-money stock option at expiry has almost no intrinsic value and a full-size delivery obligation. The premium gives no indication of the commitment, and that asymmetry is the whole hazard.

Common questions

Are stock options physically settled in India?

Yes. Equity derivatives on individual stocks settle by delivery, so an in-the-money option at expiry becomes an actual purchase or sale of the shares. Index options such as NIFTY and SENSEX remain cash-settled.

What happens if I hold an ITM stock option to expiry?

It is exercised into the shares. A long call becomes a purchase at the strike for the full contract value; a short call becomes an obligation to deliver. Brokers apply additional margin through expiry week and may square off positions that cannot meet the obligation.

How these figures are produced

Every price on these pages was traded on the exchange and is read from our own option-chain capture, which records the NIFTY and SENSEX chains once a minute through the session. Each page names the session its figures come from.

Figures that a model produced rather than the market — the Greeks, implied volatility — are labelled as model outputs wherever they appear, and never presented beside traded prices without saying which is which. The pricing is checked against published reference values on every change.
